Flight calibration

Flight calibration – what is it and why is it important?
In this post, we look in detail at what flight calibration is and why it is important to airports.

What is flight calibration?

Flight calibration is the term used to cover a wide range of flight calibration, inspection and validation services. Flight calibration can include everything from checking navigation systems and ensuring radar systems are working to ensuring an aircraft passes an inspection and its equipment is up to date.

Flight calibration services ensure an aircraft is able to operate efficiently and safely. Expert flight calibration services will cover everything from ensuring passengers on the plane have a high-quality experience to ensuring the engines are running safely. When it comes to something as important as air safety, unparalleled accuracy and professional attention to detail is required. This is why flight calibration services often use the latest technology and follow the best practice for calibration processes.

Why is flight calibration important?

There are many reasons why flight calibration is important, some of which we outline below…

1. Quality

The calibration of equipment and processes in the aviation industry is essential to ensure the aircraft is safe and can perform to a high standard. Failures in equipment or technology can be extremely expensive to replace and repair. Regular calibration should be seen as essential aircraft maintenance that must be conducted regularly to ensure the quality of the aircraft is maintained.

2. Safety

Unlike other industries, the failure of an aircraft or the failure of technology within an airport won’t just be expensive and inconvenient to solve, it could also result in the loss of many lives. Expert flight calibration ensures passenger safety and reduces the possibility of a problem occurring on an aircraft while an aircraft is in flight. Regular calibration services are required to ensure a fatal loss of lives does not occur on an aircraft.

3. Experience

Regular flight calibration services will ensure an airport can conduct safe fights that are efficient and run on-schedule. This not only creates a better customer experience for flight passengers, but it also ensures employees working on an aircraft or within an airport have a better working environment.

FSCL in Qatar

FSCL (fire support coordination lines) is an important element of flight calibration. FSCL facilitates the coordination requirements for surface targets. An FSCL is decided by a captain or commander in relation to his boundaries and where a ground-to-air or air-to-ground action can be completed. FSCL is important to flight calibration as it ensures all aircraft have adequate space to take off and land safely without compromising the safety of other aircraft. This is particularly important in Qatar as in Doha Hamad Airport, every hour 100 planes take off and land. With five planes entering or leaving HIA every three minutes, it is essential each plane has regular flight calibration services. For example, the surveillance, communication abilities and air traffic management systems of each plane will need to be high-functioning at all times.

Bayanat Engineering and HIA

Bayanat Engineering is a proud partner of HIA and has provided many flight calibration services for HIA, including FSCL services. If you would like to learn more about Bayanat Engineering’s work with HIA, contact us today.

Smart monitoring and management of water cycle in meteorology

Smart monitoring and management of water cycle in meteorology
The ever-growing global population faces an increasing climate crisis. A range of natural disasters, heat waves, droughts, heavy rains and more are intensifying, with their frequency rising too. Now more than ever, we need to be climate-smart. With all this in mind, a lot of research has been put into smart rainwater monitoring and management. Let’s take a closer look at this technology, as well as how it impacts the aviation sector, below.

Smart rainwater management and monitoring

The combination of smart hardware, services and solutions to minimise wastage, smart rainwater management uses information and analytics to deliver better outcomes across the water management lifecycle. A rainwater monitoring system, meanwhile, allows analysts to gain a thorough understanding of the nature of water and its pressure, temperature and purification at different locations, including those which are more remote. Meteorological and weather management systems have advanced rapidly in recent years and now include:

• Automated weather observing systems (AWOS)
• Meteorological sensors
• MET forecasting/visualisation systems
• Weather RADARs
• LIDAR (Windshear/Wake Vortex Measurement)
• Lightning detection systems
• Thermo dynamic profilers
• Radiometers
• Radiosonde/weather telemetry systems
• Weather decision support systems

What can rain and storms do?

Weather can be one of the most dangerous things for a pilot. Whether it is an unanticipated tailwind, a freak storm, or even just low-lying cloud, the weather cycle can cause a huge range of dangerous situations for any flight. That’s why a lot of research has been put into smart monitoring and managing the water cycle, in order to avoid any adverse effects.

Smart weather monitoring in aviation

There are a few ways that weather is monitored in modern airports. One such example is weather RADARs, built so that air traffic control can have a good idea of what cloud systems are circulating. These are supported by weather decision support systems, which give an accurate short-term forecast of what is around the corner, and how pilots can best deal with it. Combining these with runway visual range (RVR) means that a pilot can prepare for whatever conditions are ahead of them and be sure of a safe landing. These systems are highly complex and work with several other technologies to guarantee 100% accurate information of what the weather is like and what the weather is likely to be over the next few hours. Highly trained pilots can fly in any situation, but by giving them highly accurate information about conditions, we can ensure that they know exactly what they will need to do and when.

Bayanat Engineering is proud to have built some of the world’s leading weather forecasting systems for airports, and is happy to play a part in creating systems that keep passengers and pilots safe. A smart weather monitoring system is just one step towards the smooth experience passengers receive on a day to day basis. Meteorology in Qatar and how is it important?

Meteorology in Qatar and how is it important?
Meteorology is a form of atmospheric science which studies atmospheric chemistry and physics. Meteorology is most commonly used to forecast the weather and make predictions about the climate. Meteorology can be traced back 1000 years ago, but significant meteorology breakthroughs were not made until the 18th century. Since the 18th century, however, meteorology technology has advanced significantly. In this guide, we look at meteorology and explain how it is important to society.

What technologies are used in meteorology?

• Automated Weather Observing System (AWOS)

An AWOS is a configurable weather system, designed specifically for airports. It delivers real-time information about weather conditions continuously, to ensure pilots can take off in safe weather conditions.

• Meteorological sensors

An essential element of meteorology is understanding how climate conditions can change quickly. Meteorological sensors are usually placed near a body of water and help to measure changes in weather and climate. For example, the sensors will indicate if the temperature, current or characteristics of the body of water is changing due to changes in the weather or atmosphere.

• Wind profilers

Wind profilers use both radar and sound waves to detect the direction and speed of wind. The profilers usually take readings of the wind a kilometre above sea level.

• Lightning detection systems

A lightning detection system consists of a network of sensors which calculate the electromagnetic radiation that is released by lightning. The sensor network uses the radiation data to predict where lightning may strike and at what strength.

How does meteorology technology help in everyday life?

Meteorology is important in everyday life as the weather can significantly influence multiple industries and daily processes. For example, cities and towns need meteorology to prepare and monitor extreme weather conditions, such as snow and strong winds, to ensure its citizens are safe and disasters can be prevented. Meteorology technology is also essential for the agricultural industry, as farmers need to be able to predict precipitation and prepare their crops should a flood or drought be predicted. In the aviation industry, reliable meteorology systems are essential to ensure planes can take off safely and pilots can alter their routes as necessary to avoid severe weather which may put passengers in danger. The greater understanding of meteorology an airport has, the more reliable their services will be as they won’t have to cancel flights last-minute, as they will be able to predict and identify weather patterns.

Meteorology in Qatar

Although the climate in Qatar is predominately pleasant and dry, understanding meteorology is still essential for airports in Qatar to ensure they can provide safe and reliable flights for their passengers. Bayanat Engineering provides a wide range of meteorological and weather management services and systems in Qatar to ensure airports can operate as safely and efficiently as possible.

Passenger and Terminal Operations

“Why good Passenger and Terminal Operations are vital to a good airport”.
Passenger and Terminal Operations may seem to be a very broad and nebulous term, but it’s actually one of the most important parts of the operation of any airport. Here are a few specifics about the day to day operations of various passenger and terminal operation systems, and what they mean to the way an airport runs.
Information Display Systems
Guiding people through the airport is one of the most important parts of Passenger and Terminal Operations. Making sure that everyone knows if their flight is on time and what gate they need to be at are both vital for the operation of any airport since without this you’d be reliant on word of mouth to get passengers where they need to be.
These are fed by live information at all times in order to ensure that passengers know all that they need to as soon as they possibly can, so they can get on with their voyage.
Queue Management Systems
Queue management systems, or a QMS, is designed to be a way of making queues far more efficient. Rather than letting a queue form alone with no real order, queue management systems ensure that any queues that form at gates are orderly and controlled. This removes the risk of people standing around for hours on end and can lead to the entire boarding situation being much more comfortable for everyone involved.
Baggage Handling Systems
When you return from your flight, you’d tend to expect that your baggage will meet you at the other end. However, your baggage can sometimes come on a completely different flight, making connecting every passenger with their baggage an important yet difficult task.
By using state of the art baggage handling and baggage reconciliation systems, airports are able to find your specific bag from the thousands of planes that have come in and get it to you just in time to leave the airport. Effective baggage handling systems can make or break your airport experience, and years of refinement have led them to the high level of efficiency you see today.
Passenger Check-In and Boarding Systems
It’s all well and good navigating your passengers around the airport, but getting them on their flight is really the end goal of any successful airport, and the whole process begins at the check-in desk. With a good check-in procedure, you can get the ball rolling and keep track of how many passengers are present and ready to board. From there, boarding procedures can begin in an orderly manner, dictated by the number of passengers that have already checked in. With a joined-up and cohesive system from start to finish, a passenger’s journey can become much smoother and incident-free.
Ultimately, Passenger & Terminal Operations are unendingly important for the customer service side of an airport. They take you from check-in to the gate, and then out the other end with all of your possessions intact, having ensured that your flight has been smooth sailing all the way. Whilst this is far from the only aspect of an airport’s running, it’s the most customer-facing one. That makes high-quality Passenger and Terminal Operations key to any major airport. Bayanat Engineering Qatar can provide solutions for passenger movement and operations and many more. Do not hesitate to contact us for more information.

Your guide to specialized lighting & signage

Your guide to specialized lighting & signage
Bayanat Engineering Qatar is an expert provider of specialized lighting and signage in the aeronautics sector. We have completed specialized lighting and signage projects at large international airports such as Doha in Qatar, highlighting our expertise in this area. To learn more about specialized lighting and signage, read our guide below.
What is specialized lighting and signage?
Specialized lighting is a key part of airport safety, used to guide planes as they land and take off at airports. While providing an impressive nocturnal backdrop, this lighting is essential for use when there is low visibility or it is completely dark. It is necessary during the night, but also at dusk, dawn, and in fog. Without it, taking off and landing safely would be a very dangerous task.
Signage is also essential for airports. These signs use large characters on a contrasting background to advise pilots and vehicle drivers of an airfield location beyond which they must not proceed. They also inform pilots when to turn and stop, to help them proceed safely to their end destination.
Airfield ground lighting
Airfield ground lighting is the term used to describe the whole set of ground installed luminaires and related ancillaries that are used as visual aids by pilots. These lights are arranged in precise patterns to help with air navigation. This includes taxiway lights, which emit green light and are located along the taxiway centreline. Other lights include runway, apron, and approach.
Guidance signage
Guidance signage is used to direct pilots as to where they can and can’t go. These signs are color-coded depending on their meaning, and use a mixture of letters, numbers, and arrows to inform pilots of where to go.
Heliport lighting
Heliport lighting normally consists of lights that are installed in a circle or square between the touchdown and lift-off area surface and around the entire landing, such as the final approach and take-off area. If the heliport is near a taxiway, then yellow lights are used to avoid confusing pilots with the green taxiway centreline lights.
Apron flood lighting & specialized high masts
The apron is the area on a land aerodrome that is intended to accommodate aircraft for loading and unloading passengers, refueling, parking, and maintenance. Apron floodlighting illuminates this area.
Obstruction & beacon lighting
Obstruction lighting is needed for any structure that exceeds 200’ above ground according to regulations. These structures need to be well lit to eliminate air navigational hazards. The light is an omnidirectional, steady-burning elevated LED red light fixture with an IR option.
Lighting control & monitoring
Lighting control and monitoring systems are used to control a single runway or can control the complex multi-runway operation of large airports. These systems allow operators to monitor and control various airfields’ ground lightings systems such as runway, apron, and taxiway systems. The lights can be operated as a group or individually and the intensity can be altered.
Lighting photometry & calibration
Photometry and calibration are used to accurately measure airfield ground light and aid maintenance. Light intensity is measured to ensure that the lighting is compliant with guidelines.

First airport and first airport in Qatar

First airport and first airport in Qatar
When you think of the word, ‘airport’, you will most likely associate the term with the sleek, modern airports we have grown accustomed to today, such as Hamad International Airport in Qatar. Airports have, of course, not always been this way and have advanced significantly in the last 100 years. In this article we reflect on the world’s first airport, as well as the first airport in Qatar, and how companies such as Bayanat Engineering helped them become the modern transport facilities we know them to be today.
The world’s first airport
In 1919, over 100 years ago, Hounslow Heath Aerodrome opened. Many people mistakenly believe the Wright Brothers developed the first airport, whereas, in reality, they developed the world’s first continually operating airfield. For an airfield to be classified as an airport, it needs to have an aerodrome, storage for aircraft and a control tower, making Hounslow Heath Aerodrome the world’s first official airport.
The world’s first scheduled international commercial air services flew to and from Hounslow before it shut its doors in 1920 after essentially being replaced by Croydon Airport. Just three years after Hounslow was founded, the world’s first permanent airport for commercial aviation services opened in East Prussia.
The first airport in Qatar
Dukhan airport was the first airport in Qatar and was completed in the late 1930s. While the airport was initially a commercial success, it was eventually overshadowed by Doha International Airport, which was built in 1959 and subsequently made Dukhan obsolete. Some buildings within the airport were preserved but the majority of the airport grounds were left to ruin.
The importance of development
If the founders of Dukhan airport and Hounslow Heath Aerodrome were able to walk around modern airports in Qatar today, the technology surrounding them would appear as if it came from science-fiction. In the past 100 years, technological advancements have been made at an astounding pace, meaning airports have been able to advance and develop at an unprecedented rate.
Advancements in technology have brought many benefits to airports, such as allowing flights to take off more regularly and travel further distances.
How are modern airports built to address modern security risks?
Modern airports in Qatar, such as Hamad International Airport, are built to not only provide excellent commercial services but also to ensure the safety and security of all individuals who enter and exit the airport. For example, a modern airport must be complete with surveillance technology, structured cabling systems to allow for reliable communications, specialized lighting to ensure pilots have complete visibility and advanced navigation systems, to name but a few features.

Oil and gas industry safety

Oil and gas industry safety
Oil and gas is the lifeblood of the economy in Qatar. In fact, Qatar has the third-largest natural gas reserve in the world and is the number one exporter of natural gas in the world. Roughly 70% of Qatar’s revenue comes from selling and trading its oil and gas resources. In this blog post, we explore the oil and gas industry in Qatar in more detail and analyse the measures put in place to maintain safety in the industry.
The largest oil field in Qatar is the Durkan Field, an on-shore oil field which was first drilled in the late 1930s. Although the Durkan Field is on-shore, the majority of Qatar’s oil production sites are off-shore. In 2017, Qatar reported that there were 25.5 billion barrels of oil within its reserve and claimed they were producing 1.9 million barrels of oil per day. With both on and off-shore sites, the oil and gas industry in Qatar faces unique security risks, just some of which are outlined below…
• Surveillance
Surveillance is required both to ensure employees are safe at all times and to ensure no unauthorised individuals or vehicles are trying to gain access to the oil field.
• Communication
As shown by the 2011 BP oil spill, an accident within an oil field can have fatal consequences. Efficient communication systems are needed within oil fields to maintain employee safety and to ensure potential problems are navigated efficiently and quickly.
• Air traffic management
No planes, boats or cars should be authorised and given access to the oil field unless strictly necessary. Air traffic management solutions, such as radar and sonar will help to identify and mitigate all potential transport issues.
The relationship between the Qatar government and the oil and gas industry
The oil and gas industry within Qatar dominates more than 85% of the country’s export profit and accounts for 60% of its gross domestic product. Although the oil and gas industry has proven to be consistently profitable for Qatar, in 2017 the government decided to diversify its economic portfolio to ensure the country isn’t completely reliant on fossil fuels.
In 2018, The state-owned petroleum country, Qatar Petroleum, merged with the gas operating companies Qatargas and RasGas, streamlining the oil and gas industry within Qatar. This successful merger was estimated to save the country roughly £2 billion Qatari riyals. Now operating solely under the name Qatargas, the company handles over 77 million tonnes of oil and gas annually and predominately sells its products via joint venture arrangements with oil companies around the globe.
Bayanat Engineering and the oil and gas industry
